Using marijuana during pregnancy or breastfeeding poses serious risks to your baby, including low birth weight, pre-term birth, and increased chances of stillbirth. All forms of use—whether smoked, vaped, or ingested—can harm your baby’s development, and chemicals can be passed through breast milk. Protect your child by avoiding marijuana entirely.

Marijuana & Child Development:

  • Prenatal marijuana use may affect the newborn’s brain development and result in hyperactivity, trouble with memory and learning, and other long-term consequences.

  • Prenatal exposure to marijuana has been linked to self-reported anxiety and depressive symptoms in children.

  • Children whose mothers used marijuana during pregnancy were 50% more likely to be diagnosed with autism.

  • Marijuana use may affect a mother’s ability to properly care for her baby.

Marijuana Use and Motherhood:

  • There is no safe amount of marijuana use while you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • All methods of marijuana use may be harmful for your baby. This includes eating or drinking, applying creams or lotions, smoking, vaping and dabbing.
  • Negative outcomes have been seen in newborns exposed to marijuana during pregnancy such as low birth weight and are more likely to be pre-term or admitted to Intensive Care.
  • Prenatal use of marijuana products containing THC or CBD to treat nausea and vomiting have possible negative effects on the developing baby.
  • Chemicals from marijuana can be passed to your baby through breast milk.  THC is stored in fat and is slowly released over time.  “pumping and dumping” does not work with marijuana.
  • Marijuana use during pregnancy is associated with double the risk of stillbirth.

Marijuana Use and Fatherhood:

Did you Know?  For men who use marijuana weekly, their partner is twice as likely to miscarry.  Male marijuana use may have negative impacts on male fertility, including  Reduced sperm count and concentration.  Abnormalities in sperm structure.  Reduced sperm motility and viability.
